Dover Port Information
Dover is a major port on the south-east coast of England. Situated in the county of Kent, it faces France across the English Channel and is regarded as The gateway to Europe. The town is the administrative centre of the Dover district. At the 2001 census, the town of Dover proper had a population of 28,156 inhabitants, while the population of the whole urban area of Dover, as calculated by the Office for National Statistics, was 39,078 inhabitants.
The Port of Dover is one of the world’s busiest and most successful ports with cross channel ferries, cargo, cruise ships and a busy marina.
Four ferry companies operate from the port connecting to Calais, Boulogne and Dunkerque, providing the fastest sea crossings to France. SpeedFerries services operate from the Hoverport at the Western Docks. Norfolkline, P&O Ferries and SeaFrance operate from the Eastern Docks Ferry Port.
More than 11.3 million passengers passed through the port in the period January-September, nearly four per cent more compared with 2006
The growth was due to increasing numbers of cars and coaches passing through Europe’s busiest ferry port. Over 2.2 million cars was seven per cent more than 2006 whilst coach journeys rose 500 to 84,600.
